Velvet Box, an international association of young artists, launched its inaugural touring exhibition, The Awakening, in the Mercado de la Ribera (Riverside Market) building in Bilbao, on Friday, 8.00pm, September 28, 2007.

Inspired by the eponymous chapter in Herman Hesse's novel Siddhartha, in which the protagonist is profoundly moved by his awareness of his own self, the Awakening is a collective response to the questions it raises about the essence of one's own existence.

Works of painting, drawing, illustration, sculpture, installation, photography, video, design and fashion by some twenty artists and fifteen fashion designers were brought together in the Phyllotaxis, an architectural installation extending over some 300m² built within the upper hall of the market building.
